"We wanted to understand Mum's perspective"

Margaret is a retired NHS physiotherapist living with dementia.

The training was made up of short videos with explanations so that we (as the family) understood what would be best for mum who has Alzheimer’s, and what might happen as the condition progresses.

We were on the back foot a bit before this, which meant every time something new happened with mum’s condition, something went wrong or different family members suggested different ideas.

We just all needed a better understanding about the condition, but importantly to understand from Mum’s perspective.

There was nothing like this available, so we all felt lucky to have had access to this course. We needed family members/ carers to all be on the same page about the condition and what to expect and how to manage it. Such a valuable resource.

Thanks 6D.

“Very interesting training really makes you think about all the dimensions within caring for people living with dementia. If it helps people look at and address a person’s needs. It will help people improve the care they provide this training would be great for all people to have.”

“Really useful to reinforce existing knowledge would be massively helpful for careers and care homes”

“I particularly relate to the videos around, caring for people in their own home. I like the emphasis on empathising with a person with dementia and understanding behaviour is communication of needs.”

A family carer’s experience

Finding a way to engage

Spent some time with my Dad on this last night. He actually struggles with books (practical man of a certain age, poor eye sight, says he can’t find the time, etc) but this video content worked well and engaged him vastly more than anything else to date (3 years since diagnosis of his wife, my mum).

He even made notes as he went along and stuck with it for 3 hours. I had to go and collect a child from an activity at one point and he was still going when I got back and even then he asked me to go and do something because he would just like to complete the video he was on. He asked to keep my iPad so he could do more tonight.

Living with Uncertainty

What I had been worried about was that he doesn’t speak to mum about the diagnosis and whilst he is a great carer, he is often on the back foot, so a new part of her disease progression takes some processing time, maybe mixed with a little denial, (wishing it wasn’t happening perhaps), which feels like, in honesty, a constant hit for Dad as the carer and bit dangerous for mum because no one is predicting or expecting anything and even when it’s quite apparent that she needs something it takes time to process that (for example, getting lost, etc).

Feeling safer, feeling more confident

The training felt like it engaged him much more than a leaflet and in fact more than any book has so far. It made him feel better because he said he felt uncertain when people suggested certain things or used terms he wasn’t sure about, but this training covered it all. He understood it (thank goodness) and it was delivered at the right level. It honestly felt like this training makes life SAFER for Mum (and less of a gut-punch for Dad).

Being on the same page

This is the first time dad has engaged with this type of content. We had been looking for something like this but couldn’t find it for carers and family members. The next step is for the rest of the extended family to do this training, (I would love that) so that for the first time, we are all on the same page.

A truly valuable resource!
